Electroencephalography (EEG) is a technique for recording the electrical activity of the brain, providing valuable insights into brain function. It involves the observation of brain wave dynamics, morphology, and shapes, such as lambda, mu, paroxysms, vertex sharp waves, and sleep spindles. These components collectively reflect the patterns of healthy or problematic brain activity.
Following the observation phase, the recorded brain activity is processed and quantified to obtain an overall average. Quantitative Electroencephalography (qEEG), also known as brain mapping, takes the analysis a step further by applying mathematical and statistical methods to the brain’s average electrical activity over the recording period.
During qEEG, carefully edited EEG data undergoes processing through specialized databases. This processing allows for a comparison of an individual’s brain function with samples of individuals of the same sex and similar age who are without illness or pathology. In some cases, comparisons may also be made with samples of individuals diagnosed with specific conditions. This “neurometric” comparison helps identify areas of the brain exhibiting abnormalities in terms of the amounts and types of electrical activity, coherence (connectivity between sites), and phase-lag (speed of information between sites).
Brain mapping through qEEG often reveals patterns of excesses or deficiencies in brain wave frequencies that are characteristic of certain disorders. Connectivity issues between brain sites may be a key factor in conditions such as epilepsy and learning disabilities. Importantly, medications often do not address these underlying problems, leaving individuals with recurrent or chronic symptoms.
qEEG is a valuable tool for identifying various conditions, including ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), head injuries, brain instabilities, and seizure disorders. By providing a detailed understanding of the brain’s electrical activity, qEEG assists healthcare professionals in tailoring targeted interventions for individuals based on their unique neurophysiological profiles.
